Cross-country cycling team shares winning secrets

Chalk up one for the local guys.

Team Plantagenets, the bicycling team assembled by Palm Beacher Michael Falk to cycle across the country, is back from their transcontinental trek, a little chafed but safe and sound.

And get this: They won.

Falk et al. crossed the finish line in Annapolis a week ago, finishing first in their 50-to-58 age group.

The team’s secret? Sweat, strategy and, our personal favorite, low expectations.

“Our mission was just to make it safely across the country at a respectable pace,” Falk said. “Once, however, we saw the opportunity on the second day to win our division, this turned into a real race.”

Team Plantagenets gets the glory in Race Across America, but three local charities get the dough. The $400,00 raised by the team — “and donations are still coming in,” said Falk — will benefit American Heart Association’s Teaching Gardens Program, Opportunity Inc. and The Palm Beach Police Foundation Inc.

Falk, being the low-key guy that he is, refuses to take the credit.

“Not unlike my family and business life, my fortunate association with spectacular people make me look smart and successful,” Falk said.

And sunburned.
